Days Out Worth Braving The Cold For In January

13th Dec 2023

As the festivities of Christmas pass and we head into January, the short daylight hours and cold of winter can set in, leaving us wanting to do nothing more than stay in and stay warm, but there are days out in the New Forest that are worth braving the cold for, and as A. Wainwright, British fell walker and author said,

“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”

Planning winter adventures opens up a whole world of experiences, and often in beautiful places that can feel overcrowded during the summer months.

Experience the January blues...

of crisp winter days and clear blue skies. Getting up and out on a chilly winter’s morning isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, but we guarantee it’s worth it for those cerulean blue skies, the crisp morning air and the wonderful crunch of frosty leaves under foot. Wrap up, ready your warming thermos of tea and some delicious snacks and walk the trails of our New Forest. There are plenty of long hikes or shorter rambling routes to discover, something to suit all walkers.

The winter days may be short, but if you can spend just some of that time outside, watching the ponies roam, breathing in fresh forest air, and walking in nature, you can disrupt the notion of January blues and instead make it your month of motivation.

Enjoy A Winter Walk In The New Forest

Not only is forest bathing or simply spending time in nature beneficial for mental wellbeing...

walking is brilliant for cardiovascular fitness and strength, whilst those who are affected by S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) will benefit from being exposed to as much natural daylight as possible through the winter months, as the symptoms of S.A.D can worsen as winter progresses.

As a dog-friendly hotel in the New Forest, you can bring your four-legged friend for your short break, make the most of the daylight hours and then spend the rest of the afternoon and evening relaxing in front of the fire, playing games and enjoying the hearty dishes of our country pub restaurant: Monty’s Inn.

For those thinking more of a family-friendly winter attraction...

have you visited the wonderful National Motor Museum at Beaulieu? It’s certainly not only for car-lovers and motor-enthusiasts. The museum’s remarkable displays and story-telling appeals to visitors of all ages and interests, from lovers of Doctor Who to Formula 1 and land-speed racing, whilst a full admission ticket opens the doors to all that Beaulieu offers. Access to the World of Top Gear, the Beaulieu Palace House & Gardens, Little Beaulieu, Beaulieu Abbey, The Secret Army Exhibition and unlimited monorail rides. A wonderful day out and way to spend a winter’s day this January, and it’s bound to be a little quieter than a hot day in the summer holidays.

Christmas ramps up the pace of life and there’s a tendency to pack the month full of social events, festivities and catch-ups...

with January often representing little more than the end of the festive season and ‘back to work’, which can leave space for the winter blues to creep in. Instead, why not ease into the new year, slow the pace and book a few tranquil days out in the New Forest with friends, or family, a table for lunch or a spot in the lounge for afternoon tea.

Meet a friend for lunch or dinner at The Terrace, no occasion needed, just a catch up over great food and a glass of wine. Or meet with those who had no time in December for a glass of something sparkling to celebrate the new year in your own special way.

Those who have challenged themselves to Veganuary can rest assured of delicious plant-based options at The Terrace and Monty’s Inn - please inform reservations at the time of booking that you will require vegan options.

There’s another fantastic reason to get out for a day in the New Forest during the chilly month of January and that’s for a taste of adventure...

A day of cycling or perhaps a short cycling break away, or a day paddling on Beaulieu River spotting wildlife and flora only possible from the water.

Maybe it’s not adventure that will inspire your 2024, but rather some self-care and restoration, in which case, you could plan a short break with us and head over to our sister hotel Careys Manor, home to the award-winning Thai spa, SenSpa, located just 6 miles away. Guests of the Montagu Arms are invited to enjoy complimentary access to the leisure club at SenSpa which includes an indoor pool, gym, poolside Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, whilst you can also book treatments or spa days if you’re looking for a wholly rejuvenating experience and use of SenSpa’s Hydrotherapy Suite.

Not quite sure what your friend or loved one would enjoy more…

Monetary gift vouchers are available to use at our New Forest hotel which means, when the buzz of Christmas fades and it’s time to look ahead to January, they’ll have the wonderful chance to choose their own unforgettable Montagu Arms experience; something special to look forward to, no matter how cold it is outside.
