Matthew Tomkinson - Michelin Starred Chef

Head Chef Matthew Tomkinson interprets The Terrace's cuisine in a modern and refined way. Intricately prepared cuisine designed to capture a delicious and exciting range of flavours, textures and aromas. 

The menu focus' on seasonal ingredients sourced from carefully selected local suppliers and The Montagu Arm's very own Kitchen garden.

Michelin starred Chef Matthew Tomkinson and the staff of The Montagu Arms Hotel believe that free-range organic produce is not just better, because of its purity and freedom from additives but because it tastes better too.

Matthew's philosophy is to create fresh, beautifully cooked simple foods.

When asked what draws him to the kitchen, Matthew replied, that he loved the symbiotic nature of the kitchen, where each person is imperative and important to the 'whole'.

There can be intense pressure in the kitchen. It means that everybody in the kitchen must pull in the same direction 100% of the time.

"It involves a lot of quick thinking and you have a lot piling down on your plate - (pardon the pun!)"

Matthew started his career working in the kitchens of a local pub on a year's internship.

As a part of his hospitality management degree which he professes to have absolutely loved, despite friends predicting he would quit within the first week.

After completing his hospitality management degree, Matthew went on to work at the Greenhouse vegetarian restaurant in Altrincham.

He then moved through a variety of restaurants, including 4 years as chef de partie at Ockenden Manor, refining his skills along the way.

Matthew Tomkinson strives under pressure, winning the roux scholarship after competing with 6 other chefs in front of a panel comprising Gary Rhodes, Rick Stein, Brian Turner, David Nicholls, Tamasin Day-Lewis and of course the Roux family.

He then went on to win a Michelin star, one year afterwards as Head Chef at the Goose in Oxfordshire.

The Montagu Arms awards and accolades are testament to Matthew's exemplary culinary skills and passion for gourmet cuisine.

It has been voted Hampshire Restaurant of the year by Which? Good food guide and the Telegraph's Top 50 Summer Restaurants in Britain by Jasper Gerard.
